Time Well Spent 015: The Paradox of Endless Ambition and Parenthood
Endless ambition is both a gift and a curse. It fuels innovation, drives career growth, and pushes us to achieve more than we ever thought possible. But when you become a parent, that same relentless ambition collides with an immovable force: time.
Suddenly, the long hours, deep focus, and strategic planning that once felt essential, start to feel impossible.
This is a paradox I live every day. Parenthood is the great equalizer -- it forces you to take a hard look at the identify that you once grasped onto, and makes you truly consider if who you wanted to be, is who you actually need to be in this new season.
Ambition and the Illusion of Underperformance
When you have endless ambition, you don’t measure success in decades—you measure it in days. You gotta cut that shit out NOW, because its a recipe for depression, anxiety, and negative impact on those around you.
Every morning, you wake up feeling like there’s an impossible mountain to climb. Every night, you go to bed feeling like you didn’t climb high enough. This cycle creates a toxic loop of self-criticism:
• You feel like you’re always underperforming.
• You never feel like you’re doing “enough.”
• You compare today’s progress to your long-term vision—and today always falls short.
This mindset isn’t just frustrating—it’s dangerous. It warps your perspective and makes meaningful progress feel insignificant.
